Top 10 Pleo Frequently Asked Questions

If you are looking forward to buy the Robotic Pleo Dinosaur, I recommend you to read these Top 10 Pleo Frequently Asked Questions.

1. What Does Pleo Look Like Under His Skin?

A: Well its not an interesting site. And to prevent you taking it off and then spending the next two days trying to get it back on again - here's what it looks like!

2. Where Are Pleo's Touch Sensors?

A: Where are Pleo's touch sensors you may ask? Well they're here:

Pleos touch sensor map

If it's a bit hard for you to see, he's got touch sensors on his shoulders - between his front legs at the top. He's also got them on his backside (don't know why you'd want to be touching there anyway!) which are just at the top between his back legs. He's also got them on his outer thighs on all four legs. There's also one on his chin (he loves being tickled here). And there's one on the top of his head from the front sensors, between his nostrils and up to the top of his head.

There's also sensors on the bottom of his feet so he knows when he's being picked up!

3. Can Pleo Sing?

A: Well here's an interview with the guys at Ugobe who give the information:

It basically says that you can "shadow" Pleo's sounds, i.e. it used to do make a certain sound when it's eating, but you can change that to be another sound, perhaps yourself eating!

4. Can Pleo Interact With Other Pleo's?

A: The answer is yes - to a degree. Because they use infra-red to move around they can cross-beams and react that way. In time you'll be able to programme them to respond to other infra-red beams.

5. Can Pleo recognize my voice?

A: At the current time Pleo does not have voice recognition or speech recognition. Since Pleo is upgradeable, perhaps he (or she) may have either of those capabilities at a later time; but currently the answer is no. Voice recognition is not the same thing as speech recognition. Speech recognition is what most people are familiar with; where a computer or robot can listen to speech and recognize the words you are saying. People have asked for the voice recognition feature so they could say their Pleo's name and be able to pick their Pleo out of a crowd when it responds to their call. A very cool feature, but not part of Pleo's repertoire at this time.

6. How long does Pleo’s battery goes?

A: Pleo's built-in NiMH battery should last for about 1 hour of continuous use (and takes about 4 hours to charge). If you have multiple batteries, you can keep one in Pleo and charge another using an external charger. This way you can keep Pleo going for hours on end.

7. Can Pleo behavior Change?

A: Yes. Pleo behavior can be programmed or changed using the forthcoming Pleo Development Kit (PDK). There are currently limited details available about the PDK, although UGOBE has they are excited about and committed to supporting 3rd party developers.

8. Can Pleo Learn New Tricks? What are They?

A: Pleo's comes with a wide variety of built-in tricks, initially based on pre-programmed animations. You'll need to train Pleo to do these tricks by encouraging him with treats. If you're not satisfied with Pleo's built-in tricks, you can program new animations yourself. Pleo standard tricks include: Sneeze, Bark in the Air, Sit, Lie down, Bow down, Crouch, Rear up, Stretch, Stand on diagonal legs, Catch a cold, Beg for food and Limp.

9. What & How does Pleo see?

A: Pleo sees using a custom designed camera letting him detect objects in his path and track the movement of some colored objects. The camera is connected to Pleo's ARM7 processor chip where the input is analyzed and responses are triggered. Pleo's vision can be improved and changed through future software downloads to the processor.
